Message From Albert Owen MP (Ynys Môn) May 2005 It is a great honour and privilege to be re-elected Member of Parliament for Anglesey. It is even more of a thrill with an increased majority on the 2001 result. Few people get the chance to represent their native constituency in the House of Commons. I am Holyhead born and bred and still live in the Llaingoch area where I spent the best years of my life as a child. I have seen the good and the not so good times here on Anglesey. The decline of the 1980’s brought me to politics. Since my election in 2001 I have concentrated on re-building our infrastructure and community pride. I will continue to build on this during my second term as the Island’s MP by working with others. Holyhead and Anglesey are wonderful places to work, live and visit. I send special good wishes to those who are living many miles away but are nevertheless close in their hearts. I attended Llaingoch School, then on to the ‘County’ and left to join the Merchant Navy. After a period ‘deep sea’ I returned to work in the port of Holyhead. I returned to full-time education, first at Coleg Harlech, then on to York University, graduating with a politics degree. I returned to work in Holyhead as the manager of the Unemployed Workers Centre (the Old Cybi Hall) from 1997 to 2001. In 2001 I was elected Labour MP for Ynys Môn, the first native MP since Cledwyn Hughes (1951-1979). I promote Holyhead and Anglesey at every opportunity, inside and outside the House of Commons. I am proud of my roots and value the friendship and support I have built up with my fellow residents. In my case the old adage is true – ‘you can take the boy out of Holyhead, but never Holyhead out of the boy’. When I walk the coastal footpaths of Anglesey and Mynydd Twr in particular, I often think how lucky we are. A sincere thank you to the people of Anglesey for their continued support With best wishes
